Founders Brewery

Founders Brewery started trading in 1997 and initially run into financial difficulties. Struggling to find a identity and making beers that the founders Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers called unremarkable.

Close to bankruptcy they decided to brew the kind of beers they wanted to drink. An emphasis on complex beers, big aromatics and flavours and using the finest ingredients possible.

Throughout the 2000’s the popularity of Founders Brewery grows and ratings for both the beers and brewery are amongst the best in the world. The brewery is ranked 2nd best in the world by ratebeer.com two years in a row.

Origins Of Breakfast Stout

Breakfast Stout Recipe

Dave Engbers initial inspiration for a coffee, chocolate beer came from Founders own taproom. Snacking on chocolate covered espresso beans and washing them down with Founders Porter set the wheels in motion for developing a chocolate, coffee stout.

Recipe Notes

  • This clone recipe for Founders Breakfast Stout was primarily sourced from BYO magazine who have included roasted barley in the grist. I think this is closest to Founders recipe.
  • A similar recipe is posted on the American Home brewers Association site that suggests the recipe is backed up by one of Founders Brewers, there is no roasted barley in this recipe even though the same brewer states it is used in this article.
