Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Clone Recipe

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Clone Recipe

When it comes to iconic beers there are not many that reach the status of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. I remember when I first tried it and thinking that there was nothing on the shelves like it. The bold, bright hoppiness shined through.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale spawned the 1000’s of beers that come after it that liberally used Cascade hops at the end of the boil, some of these beers in the UK became classics in their own right.

Hoppy beers today are something completely different. Sierra Nevada pale ale seems positively tame in comparison to triple dry-hopped IPAs we have being released now but how many of these will come anywhere close to the iconic status of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale: A Beer For Home Brewing

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. was started by Ken Grossman a homebrewer who run a homebrew supply store. Now a billionaire I’m sure his success has led to 1000’s of other homebrewers founding their breweries.

In fact, Sierra Nevada is so open to home brewing that they release the recipe for Pale Ale. Whether you can brew it yourself is the test, how close can your home brew version come to the real thing.

The recipe is very simple, with just 2 types of malt and 1 variety of hop. This type of beer is a joy to make and really help hone your brewing skills.

The story of Sierra Nevada is great and I highly recommend it.

Malt Extract Version

To brew a malt extract version of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale substitute the pale malt for one of the following:

3.85kg (8.5lb) Pale Liquid Malt Extract

or

3.15kg (6.9lb) Pale Dry Malt Extract

Steep the crystal malt in a grain bag for 20 minutes, add a third of the malt extract at the start of the boil and the remaining 2/3rds a few minutes before the end of the boil.
